In 1985, our family stumbled upon the little village of Harwell, about 15 miles south of Oxford. It was then celebrating its 1000th year. There's not a whole lot in the village itself -- a shop, a pub, and a nice Norman church dating to 1190.
Interestingly, there is now a science and technology campus a few miles away, which is also known as Harwell. It has a number of impressive scientific organizations there, from the European Space Agency to a particle accelerator that can be used as a giant microscope. Some 7,500 scientists and engineers work on the site. It seems to have replaced a nuclear power plant that used to be visible from Harwell village.
